The last full day there was so eventful I had to separate it into 2 parts. I'm starting with the 2nd part because I want to close this series with the first part.
Day 7 part two
Names dates and locations have been changed.
So the last full day in Graniela had been going great. I was taking pictures of a great, cooperative couple and earning my place on the ktb website. By now it was nighttime and I was kicking myself because I wanted to get one more picture of the couple near a taxi and I didn't bring a light with me.
So while walking on a curb I step over a giant crack in it as Natasha points outs a funny named building. I look over and while I think about what the building name means I fall into another giant crack in the curb (for the record I don't blame Natasha at all) and all I remember is trying to catch my balance and being in more pain than I can handle silently.
So I catch my balance and after screaming everyone looks at me and asks if I'm ok. I tell them I'm fine and after I hobble back onto the curb and look at my feet I realize that I'm bleeding and there's something stuck in my toe. I thought it was glass at first and I almost fainted. Fortunately 2 of the girls I was with are doctors, they took a look at it washed it off with water and saline (who the heck carries saline with them? Whatever I'm grateful) made a makeshift bandage out of a napkin and paper bag and took me to a clinic.
I remember there being a pool of blood and one of the doctors saying I might need stitches. And the thing that made it even worse was that I broke my favorite pair of sandals that Ive had for over 10 years!
Alright too much writing, here's some pictures.
This is Angela, she was one of the doctors and a medical student here in gruniela. She's the one who got me in the clinic right away cause the doctor there is one of her professors. I know it looks like she's crying because I'm in so much pain and the wound is bad, but really she's laughing because I'm screaming and the wound is not that bad.
It was a really uneasy thing going into that room because it looked like every scary movie torture scene I've ever seen...
I should point out that that's not blood on my foot, it's the disinfectant they put on
Here they're working on my foot and I'm biting a towel because whatever they're doing down there hurts more than taco bell diarrhea
Visiting the clinic was free and my Prescription medicine was also free. I feel like I'm in a Michael Moore movie.
I'm grateful for everyone here. Whether it's carrying my stuff, carrying me, translating for me or offering me a sponge bath everyone was so nice and accommodating.
I'm leaving here in about 12 hours. It's a bitter sweet moment. There are things about this place that drive me crazy, but there are more things about here that I love. Not having any Internet or cellphone for over a week has been really interesting. What I'm usually worried about (work, school, tv, etc.) I don't even think of because there's nothing reminding me of those things.
I would definitely come back here. Would definitely want to learn more Spanish and come back here on a motorcycle or car and just tour the entire country.
You're right, the hospital looks like something from a horror scene. And the picture with Angela laughing/crying is hilarious! With you in the background clutching your yellow hanky. Hahaha
ReplyDeleteBut the foot does look painful. :/
